Common Signs of Stored Product Pest Activity
Use these clues to narrow down likely pests before clicking a species profile.
Webbing, clumping, or “stringy” product
Often linked to stored product moth larvae (pantry moths / flour moths). Webbing can foul equipment, contaminate product, and create humid micro-sites that support mold.
Round exit holes in kernels
Classic sign of internal feeders (weevils, lesser grain borer, grain moths). Adults emerge leaving clean circular holes.
Hairy larvae, shed skins, or “fuzzy” contamination
Common with dermestids and some beetles. Shed larval skins and hairs can contaminate product and trigger allergic reactions.
Fine grain dust, frass, or “pepper-like” droppings
May indicate beetle feeding, heavy insect pressure, or rodent activity depending on particle size and location.
Off-odors (musty, sour, pungent)
Can signal flour beetles, moisture problems, or hidden harborage. Odors are often a symptom of root cause conditions (residual buildup, leaks, warm zones).
Moisture, condensation, or mold
Often associated with psocids and secondary feeders that thrive where humidity is elevated. Moisture control and sanitation are critical.
Gnawing, torn packaging, grease rub marks
Rodent pressure (mice/rats). Rodents also create major contamination and audit risk.
