What Is Structural Fumigation?

Structural fumigation is a whole-facility treatment that uses a precisely calculated concentration of fumigant gas to eliminate pests throughout an enclosed structure.

Unlike surface sprays or fogging treatments, fumigation:

  • Penetrates walls, equipment voids, and enclosed spaces
  • Reaches inside grain, bagged products, and packaging areas
  • Controls eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults
  • Eliminates rodents and insect infestations in a single treatment

FSS utilizes ProFume® gas fumigant, a cylinderized sulfuryl fluoride product manufactured in the United States and registered in all 50 states. ProFume is labeled for use in structures and containers that store, process, and transport raw and processed commodities, and meets Codex standards for international trade.

Each fumigation is customized based on:

  • Target pest species
  • Facility size and configuration
  • Temperature and commodity conditions
  • Regulatory considerations
  • Downtime windows

Precision matters — and that’s where expertise makes the difference.

When Is Structural Fumigation Necessary?

Sanitation and exclusion are always the first priorities in an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program.

However, there are situations where facilities do not have the luxury of time.

Consider the recent national case where a rodent-infested warehouse resulted in a $41 million federal fine after investigators documented live rodents, carcasses, feces, and contamination inside a distribution center. The financial impact extended far beyond the treatment itself — affecting reputation, regulatory scrutiny, and operational continuity.

When infestations escalate, facilities face difficult choices:

  • Months of incremental IPM recovery
  • Repeated shutdowns for localized treatments
  • Ongoing audit risk
  • Product loss
  • Customer confidence erosion

Structural fumigation offers a rapid, controlled solution.

The Economic Case for Structural Fumigation

For many facilities, fumigation is not just a pest control decision — it is a business decision.

Example: A 100,000 square-foot warehouse may cost approximately $20,000 for a rodent-focused structural fumigation. Compare that to product disposal, failed audit penalties, regulatory fines, contract loss, brand damage, and extended shutdowns.

In a food processing plant, downtime alone can exceed $1 million per day. Multiple seasonal shutdowns for fogging or repeated insect treatments can quickly surpass the cost of a single comprehensive fumigation.

Fogging VS Fumigation

Many facilities rely on fogging treatments during shutdowns. While useful in some scenarios, fogging typically controls only a portion of exposed adult insects. As a result, fogging often achieves limited population suppression while leaving reproductive stages intact. Used strategically, fumigation can reset the facility so preventive IPM can function effectively.

Fogging

Fogging does not effectively penetrate the following:

Wall voids
Equipment interiors
Deep structural spaces
Egg or pupal life stages
Enclosed product areas

Fumigation

Structural fumigation can effectively do the following:

Penetrate inaccessible areas
Eliminate hidden resident populations
Achieve near-complete control across all life stages
Reduce the need for repeated winter shutdowns
Establishe a clean baseline

Precision Fumigation™ Approach

FSS applies Precision Fumigation™ tools and techniques to ensure safe, accurate, and compliant treatments. We work closely with plant leadership, QA, safety, and maintenance teams to coordinate shutdowns and minimize disruption — performing fumigations over weekends, holiday shutdowns, scheduled maintenance windows, and as emergency corrective actions, with nationwide response capability.

Every project includes:

Pre-Fumigation Site Assessment

Facility walk-through, target-pest review, and feasibility analysis.

Facility Sealing Strategy

A sealing plan that holds gas concentration where it counts.

Gas Concentration Monitoring

Real-time monitoring to verify effective, label-compliant exposure.

Compliance Documentation

Audit-ready records for every phase of the fumigation.

Clearance Verification

Confirmed safe levels before any re-entry.

Post-Fumigation Re-Entry Support

Guidance to get your team and operations back online safely.

Stored Product Insect Expertise

Structural fumigation is most effective when guided by species-level understanding. Proper timing, dosage, and exposure depend on insect biology — so our treatments are built on entomological principles. We specialize in stored product insects including:

Part of a Complete IPM Program

Structural fumigation is not a substitute for sanitation, exclusion, and monitoring — it is a strategic tool within a comprehensive stored product protection program. Used appropriately, it eliminates entrenched populations that would otherwise undermine preventive efforts, so your IPM program can work as intended.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is structural fumigation, and when is it needed?

Structural fumigation treats an entire facility with a fumigant gas that penetrates walls, equipment, and product to reach pests wherever they hide. It is the right choice when an infestation is widespread or established in hard-to-reach areas that surface treatments cannot control, which is common in mills, food plants, and warehouses.

How long will our facility be down?

Most structural fumigations are completed over a weekend: sealing and gas introduction, a set exposure period (often 24 to 48 hours depending on target pest and temperature), then monitored aeration until the building is cleared for safe re-entry. We plan around your production schedule to minimize downtime.

Is fumigation safe for our building, equipment, and products?

Yes. Applied and aerated according to the label, fumigants leave no significant residue and do not harm structures or most equipment. We provide preparation guidance for sensitive items, and no one re-enters until gas readings confirm the space is safe.

How do we prepare for a fumigation?

We provide a detailed preparation checklist covering sealing, shutting down certain systems, protecting or removing specific items, and coordinating staff schedules. Our team walks you through every step and handles the sealing and monitoring.

Are you licensed and insured to fumigate our facility?

Yes. Every FSS fumigation is performed by licensed, certified applicators following federal and state regulations and all label directions, with full documentation for your audit and food-safety records.
