Structural Fumigation (ProFume® / Sulfuryl Fluoride)

What is structural fumigation?

Structural fumigation is a whole-facility treatment where a gas fumigant is introduced into a sealed structure to eliminate pests throughout the building—including pests hidden inside walls, equipment voids, racking, and other hard-to-reach spaces. NPIC describes fumigation as using toxic gases in an enclosed space to control pests, and emphasizes that treatments require professional handling, monitoring, and safe aeration before reentry.

When does a food plant choose fumigation instead of “normal” IPM?
Sanitation and exclusion are always first priority in an IPM program. But fumigation is often chosen when:

  • Pest pressure is threatening food safetyaudit outcomes, or customer confidence
  • You need a fast “reset” during a shutdown window (weekend/holiday)
  • Populations are established in hidden spaces where fogging and spot treatments can’t reach
  • You need full-life-stage control (eggs → larvae → pupae → adults)

A helpful way to frame it for leadership: IPM is the long-term prevention engine; fumigation is the rapid reset button when time and risk are critical.

What pests does ProFume control?

Per the ProFume® label, it is labeled to control rodents and all life stages of stored product pests in approved sites (including many food-handling and processing environments).

Can ProFume be used in food processing facilities?

Yes—when applied according to the label and managed correctly. The ProFume label lists food handling establishments and provides examples including bakeries, cereal processing, feed mills, flour mills, warehouses/bins/elevators, meat processing, nut processing, spice mills, sugar processing, and more.

What commodities can be fumigated with ProFume?

The ProFume label includes a broad list of raw and processed commodities, including many relevant to food and grain supply chains (examples include wheat, corn, rice, popcorn, barley, sorghum, oats, millet, dried fruits, herbs/spices, nuts, cocoa/coffee postharvest, and others).

What does a structural fumigation “look like” operationally?

A typical structural fumigation has five high-level phases: 

  1. Planning & scoping (site review, target pests, layout, schedule, risk controls) 
  1. Sealing (containment so gas concentration can be maintained) 
  1. Introduction & exposure (gas introduced and held at effective levels) 
  1. Aeration (controlled ventilation to reduce gas to safe levels) 
  1. Clearance & documentation (reentry criteria met; documentation provided) 

NPIC emphasizes that fumigation requires the space be enclosed and that aeration is a key part of the process before reentry.

How fast is structural fumigation compared to IPM?

If you’re under an urgent timeline, fumigation can deliver a rapid, whole-facility reset during a planned shutdown (often a weekend window). IPM can absolutely work—but it may take weeks to months to drive populations down when pests are established in hidden harborages and equipment voids. 

Why not just fog the building?

Fogging can be useful inside a broader IPM strategy, but it’s not the same tool. In general: 

  • Fogging primarily impacts exposed insects in treated airspace 
  • Fumigation penetrates the structure and reaches pests across all life stages when done correctly in a sealed environment

Is ProFume compliant for operations that ship domestically and export?

ProFume is widely used in food-handling environments under label direction, and the label notes its applicability to a broad range of food-handling establishments and commodities.

What’s a real-world risk example of letting rodent pressure get out of control?

Warehouses that lose control of rodents can face severe regulatory and financial consequences. For example, federal enforcement actions tied to rodent contamination at a distribution center have resulted in very large penalties and major business disruption.

Grain Fumigation (Phosphine / Aluminum & Magnesium Phosphide)

What is grain fumigation?

Grain fumigation uses a fumigant—most commonly phosphine—to eliminate stored product insects within bulk grain storages. Effective grain fumigation depends on gas concentration + exposure time + temperature + sealing, not just “adding product.”

What temperatures are needed for phosphine fumigation?

Temperature is a major driver of insect metabolism and fumigant performance. As a practical rule, many programs target temperatures above ~60°F for predictable results and timelines (and adjust as needed based on conditions and target pests). What concentration do you target and how long does it take?

Many commercial programs verify performance by monitoring phosphine and often aim for effective exposure levels (commonly discussed as hundreds of ppm depending on strategy, sealing, temperature, and label requirements). Your internal best-practice target (e.g., 800–1000 ppm) can be included as “typical program targets,” while reminding users that label directions and site conditions control the final plan.

Why does sealing and recirculation matter?

On large bins and tall storages, gas distribution can be uneven without the right approach. Recirculation and good sealing help ensure the fumigant reaches the entire treated volume at effective concentrations—especially where grain depth and structure geometry make uniform diffusion difficult. 

Is phosphine a restricted use pesticide?

In many contexts and states, fumigants are regulated tightly and require trained, licensed applicators and strong safety controls. Minnesota’s fumigation FAQ resource emphasizes regulatory oversight and safety considerations for fumigation work.
