IPM, Fumigation & Stored-Product Pest Control in Ohio
Ohio is a top-5 U.S. soybean state and top-10 in corn and winter wheat — and #2 in eggs, with an agriculture and food cluster that supports roughly one in eight Ohio jobs and about $33 billion of the state economy, where food processing is the single largest piece. Grain moves to market through inland elevators and the Port of Toledo Great Lakes export gateway. From the food and feed plant to the elevator and farm bin, FSS keeps Ohio product clean, compliant, and inspection-ready — and that is the only thing we do.

45+ years of stored-product expertise — with Ohio offices serving the Cincinnati and Toledo regions. Founded in 1981, FSS specializes in stored-product protection, not general pest control. We hold one of the highest concentrations of certified entomologists in the industry: 3 Board Certified Entomologists (BCE), 11 Associate Certified Entomologists (ACE), a Ph.D. entomologist, research scientists, and OSHA-authorized trainers. Our team helped pioneer practical alternatives to methyl bromide during the global Montreal Protocol phaseout — work that took our founder around the world as a United Nations methyl-bromide phase-out advisor and earned recognition from the U.S. EPA for leadership in ozone protection — and has trained thousands of grain and food-industry professionals worldwide.
The Pests That Threaten Ohio Grain & Food Plants
Across food plants, feed mills, elevators, and farm bins, the same stored-product complex drives the risk. Primary (internal) feeders — the rice, maize, and granary weevils, the lesser grain borer, and the Angoumois grain moth — develop inside sound kernels. Secondary and food-facility pests work broken grain, dust, flour, and finished product: the red and confused flour beetles, sawtoothed grain beetle, rusty grain beetle, and the Indianmeal moth — the most common moth in food and processing facilities. Ohio State Extension’s message is prevention-first: sanitation and monitoring before treatment, with fumigation to reset an entrenched population.
IPM & Fumigation Services for Ohio Operations
FSS protects Ohio operations through three integrated tiers:
- Integrated Pest Management (IPM) — documented, monitoring-based programs for food and feed facilities: remote rodent and insect monitoring, pheromone trapping, sanitation and exclusion guidance, and root-cause analysis that keep plants inspection-ready and reduce reliance on broad-spectrum chemicals.
- Structural fumigation — ProFume® (sulfuryl fluoride) for flour mills, food and pet food plants, feed mills, and warehouses on coordinated shutdown schedules, eliminating every life stage of stored-product insects throughout the structure.
- Grain fumigation — commercial and terminal-elevator phosphine fumigation (aluminum phosphide and cylinderized VaporPhos®, Eco2Fume®) with recirculation (J-System), verified with gas-concentration monitoring across the grain mass.
All three tiers are backed by gas monitoring and equipment calibration so results are verified, not assumed.
Built for audit readiness in Ohio. Grain handlers are regulated by the Ohio Department of Agriculture (Grain, Feed & Seed), and fumigation is performed only by ODA-certified applicators, with a written Fumigation Management Plan on every aluminum/magnesium phosphide job and support for FDA FSMA preventive controls and GFSI audits (SQF, BRC). We serve food, feed, and grain operations across the state of Ohio.
