The Pests That Threaten Iowa Grain & Food Plants
In food plants, feed mills, and stored grain, the pest complex is the same handful of stored-product insects. Primary (internal) feeders — the rice, granary, and maize weevils and the lesser grain borer — develop inside sound kernels, leaving only fumigation, discounting, or feed-as-is once they’re established. Secondary feeders work broken grain, dust, flour, and finished product: the red and confused flour beetles, sawtoothed grain beetle, the Indianmeal moth (one of the most common pests in Iowa bins, elevators, and food facilities), and the Angoumois grain moth. As Iowa State Extension puts it, sanitation is roughly 80% of an effective program — fumigants leave no residual, so grain or product can re-infest within 72 hours if the underlying conditions aren’t fixed. Built for audit readiness in Iowa.
