IPM, Fumigation & Stored-Product Pest Control in Iowa

Iowa’s #1 corn crop and the nation’s largest grain-storage base feed one of the densest concentrations of food, feed, and ethanol processing in the country — and every one of those facilities lives or dies by audit readiness and pest control. Iowa is #1 in U.S. corn (2.52 billion bushels) and #2 in soybeans, #1 in total and on-farm grain storage (3.58 billion bushels of total capacity), and #1 in hogs and #1 in ethanol. From the food plant and feed mill to the elevator and farm bin, FSS keeps Iowa product clean, compliant, and inspection-ready — and that is the only thing we do.

45+ years of stored-product expertise — with Iowa offices in Cedar Rapids and Des Moines. Founded in 1981, FSS specializes in stored-product protection, not general pest control. We hold one of the highest concentrations of certified entomologists in the industry: 3 Board Certified Entomologists (BCE), 11 Associate Certified Entomologists (ACE), a Ph.D. entomologist, research scientists, and OSHA-authorized trainers. Our team helped pioneer practical alternatives to methyl bromide during the global Montreal Protocol phaseout — work that took our founder around the world as a United Nations methyl-bromide phase-out advisor and earned recognition from the U.S. EPA for leadership in ozone protection — and has trained thousands of grain and food-industry professionals worldwide. That depth shows up in your plant, your bins, and your audit file.

The Pests That Threaten Iowa Grain & Food Plants

In food plants, feed mills, and stored grain, the pest complex is the same handful of stored-product insects. Primary (internal) feeders — the rice, granary, and maize weevils and the lesser grain borer — develop inside sound kernels, leaving only fumigation, discounting, or feed-as-is once they’re established. Secondary feeders work broken grain, dust, flour, and finished product: the red and confused flour beetles, sawtoothed grain beetle, the Indianmeal moth (one of the most common pests in Iowa bins, elevators, and food facilities), and the Angoumois grain moth. As Iowa State Extension puts it, sanitation is roughly 80% of an effective program — fumigants leave no residual, so grain or product can re-infest within 72 hours if the underlying conditions aren’t fixed. That’s why our work centers on IPM first.

IPM & Fumigation Services for Iowa Operations

FSS protects Iowa operations through three integrated tiers:

  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM) — documented, monitoring-based programs built for food and feed facilities: remote rodent and insect monitoring, pheromone trapping, sanitation and exclusion guidance, and root-cause analysis that keep plants inspection-ready and reduce reliance on broad-spectrum chemicals.
  • Structural fumigationProFume® (sulfuryl fluoride) for flour mills, food and pet food plants, feed mills, ethanol facilities, and warehouses on coordinated shutdown schedules, eliminating every life stage of stored-product insects throughout the structure.
  • Grain fumigation — commercial and terminal-elevator phosphine fumigation (aluminum phosphide and cylinderized VaporPhos®, Eco2Fume®) with recirculation (J-System), verified with gas-concentration monitoring across the grain mass.

All three tiers are backed by gas monitoring and equipment calibration so results are verified, not assumed.

Built for audit readiness in Iowa. Grain warehouses and dealers are licensed by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS), and fumigation is performed only by IDALS-certified applicators, with a written Fumigation Management Plan on every aluminum/magnesium phosphide job and support for FDA FSMA preventive controls and GFSI audits (SQF, BRC). We serve food, feed, and grain operations across the state of Iowa.
