The Pests That Threaten Illinois Grain & Food Plants
Across food plants, feed mills, elevators, and farm bins, the same stored-product complex drives the risk. Primary (internal) feeders — the maize, rice, and granary weevils and the lesser grain borer — develop inside sound kernels and are among the most destructive stored-grain pests. Secondary feeders work broken grain, dust, flour, and finished product: the red and confused flour beetles, sawtoothed grain beetle, the Indianmeal moth (the most common stored-food moth, with webbing and dispersing larvae), and the Angoumois grain moth. University of Illinois IPM guidance is clear that sanitation and ongoing monitoring come first — fumigation resets a problem, but conditions decide whether it comes back.
Time Your Protection to the Illinois Season
Illinois corn and soybeans go into the bin in October–November, and grain quality has to be managed through winter to market. Insect activity drops off below 55°F and molds are suppressed at or below 40°F, so the winter target is 30–40°F. Run aeration on cool, dry days to equalize the grain mass and after warm spells — avoiding a grain-to-air differential greater than about 20°F, which drives moisture migration, crusting, and spoilage. Inspect bins at least every two weeks (weekly when weather threatens), using temperature cables and CO₂ sensors, since rising CO₂ is an early sign of insect or microbial activity.

- USDA/APHIS export fumigation — phytosanitary and pre-shipment treatment for export grain and commodities, including Australian offshore BMSB programs, performed by APHIS-certified applicators from our Illinois offices.
