The Cicada Killer
The Cicada Killer

Since the beginning of working in the pest control industry, I have always been fascinated by cicada killers and their behavior. Cicada killers are large wasps that can be found in many parts of the United States during the summer months. They are known for their distinctive black and yellow stripes and their fierce hunting habits.
Capturing a cicada killer in action can be quite challenging. They are fast and agile and often move quickly, making it difficult to get a clear shot. But with patience and a bit of luck, it is possible to get a great photo. One of my favorite memories of photographing cicada killers was on a hot summer day when I stumbled upon a large group of them swarming around a tree. I set up my camera and waited, trying to anticipate their movements. Just as I was about to give up, I noticed them occasionally resting on a rose bush. I decided to make an impromptu blind and set it up next to the rose bush. A few minutes pass and suddenly what I patiently waited for happens. A large cicada killer lands on the rose bush and I was finally able to capture a few good images.
Photographing cicada killers is also a great way to appreciate the beauty and diversity of nature. They come in a variety of colors and patterns, from the striking black and yellow stripes of the Eastern cicada killer to the reddish-brown of the Western cicada killer. They also play an important role in controlling cicada populations.
Cicada killers are fascinating insects to observe and photograph. They are large, intimidating, and have fascinating hunting habits. They are also harmless to humans, so you don't need to be afraid of getting stung. Next time you come across a cicada killer, don't hesitate to pull out your camera and snap a few shots. You may just capture a masterpiece!
